Before we begin: what do we mean by "Ischia"?
There is a small detail that can be confusing when you first start getting to know the island.
When we say Ischia, we usually mean the whole island. But Ischia is also the name of one of the six municipalities that make up the island.
The island of Ischia is made up of Forio, Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola Terme, Ischia, Barano d'Ischia and Serrara Fontana.
The Municipality of Ischia, on the other hand, includes Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte, as well as the other areas within its territory.
So, throughout this guide, when we talk about "Ischia", we normally mean the island as a whole: from Forio to Barano, from Lacco Ameno to Serrara Fontana, including Casamicciola and the Municipality of Ischia.
It is more than just a distinction on a map. It is also a way of understanding the island.
Every municipality, village and area has its own history, landscape and its own way of experiencing Ischia.
