Some restaurants are remembered for their food. Others for the view. And then there are places that become part of the memories people take home from their travels.

That has always been our vision for Gabbiano Beach.

When our family opened this restaurant, our dream was simple. We wanted to create a place where people could enjoy fresh seafood, genuine hospitality and one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island of Ischia. Over the years, however, we realised that we were offering something far greater than a meal.

Every evening we welcome guests from all over the world. Some have spent the day exploring the hidden beaches of Ischia, others have wandered through the charming streets of Forio or relaxed in the thermal gardens of Citara. They arrive with sun-kissed skin, the scent of the sea still lingering after a day on the island, ready to slow down and enjoy the evening.

And that is when the experience truly begins.

There is one piece of advice I always give our guests, and it often surprises them. If you want to experience the sunset properly, don't book at the last minute. Come early. During the summer, I always recommend arriving around 7:30 pm. Not because it makes our service easier, but because I believe a sunset deserves time.

A beautiful sunset isn't something you squeeze in between courses. It isn't a five-minute moment before dinner arrives. It unfolds slowly, changing minute after minute, filling the sky with different colours while the sea reflects every shade of light. Like a great bottle of wine or an unforgettable conversation, it is something to savour without rushing.

I love watching our guests settle into the evening. A glass of local wine is poured, a few appetisers are shared around the table and conversations begin to flow naturally. At first nobody notices the light changing, but little by little everything feels different. The sea becomes quieter, the colours warmer and the atmosphere softer. Without anyone planning it, dinner slowly becomes something much more meaningful.

That is the moment when I realise, once again, that at Gabbiano Beach we are not simply serving dinner.

We are creating the perfect setting for memories that will last long after the holiday is over.

When the Restaurant Slows Down, the Evening Truly Begins

After so many years, there is one thing I still find myself watching every single evening. It isn't the sunset itself, although no two sunsets over Ischia are ever the same. What fascinates me most is watching the people around us. At first, every table has its own story. Some guests are talking about the beach they discovered that morning, others are planning the next day of their holiday, while some simply sit back with a glass of wine, enjoying the pleasure of having nowhere else to be. Different languages blend together, conversations fill the air and everyone is living their own evening, completely unaware that, in just a few minutes, something will quietly bring them all together.

It happens so naturally that almost nobody notices when it begins. The light softens, the colours become warmer and the Mediterranean starts reflecting shades of gold and amber. Conversations slow down, forks are gently placed back on the table, someone reaches for the hand of the person sitting beside them and, one after another, faces turn towards the horizon. It isn't something anyone announces, and yet it happens every evening as if the sea itself had invited everyone to pause for a moment.

That is the part of the day I love the most. For a few minutes the restaurant almost disappears. It no longer matters where our guests come from or what language they speak. Everyone is simply watching the same sunset, sharing the same silence and experiencing the same feeling. Even after all these years I still stop whenever I can. I could carry on working without looking up, but I never do. Some moments deserve your full attention, and watching the sun slowly sink into the Mediterranean is one of them.

Perhaps that is why so many couples choose Gabbiano Beach for one of the most important evenings of their lives. Almost every week we receive messages from someone planning a marriage proposal. They ask which table offers the best view, what time the sun will touch the horizon and how everything can happen naturally, without feeling staged. When they finally arrive, you can almost always recognise them. They try to hide their excitement, but it never really works. Some keep checking the time, others suddenly become unusually quiet, while their partner has no idea that, in just a few moments, life is about to take a completely different direction. Our role is surprisingly simple. We don't create the moment. We simply create the atmosphere where that moment can happen naturally. The sea, the sunset and the emotions do everything else.

Marriage proposals have become part of our story almost without us noticing. Every week we receive messages from guests planning one of the most important moments they will ever experience. They ask about the perfect table, the exact time of sunset, the best place to stand and whether we can help make everything feel natural. Behind every message there is the same mixture of excitement, hope and nervous anticipation. We know how much trust they are placing in us, and we never take that responsibility for granted.

When the evening finally arrives, you can usually tell who they are before a single word is spoken. There is a certain excitement that cannot be hidden. One more glance at the horizon, another look at the watch, a deep breath before the right moment finally arrives. Meanwhile, their partner is simply enjoying the evening, completely unaware that in just a few minutes a simple dinner will become one of the most unforgettable memories of their life.

Then it happens.

One person stands up, gently takes the other's hand and, with the Mediterranean stretching endlessly behind them, finds the courage to ask a question that will change everything. For a few seconds the entire restaurant seems to hold its breath. Conversations fade away, glasses remain untouched on the tables and even those who have never met the couple instinctively understand that they are witnessing something extraordinary.

When the answer finally comes, applause rises almost spontaneously from every corner of the restaurant. Complete strangers smile at one another, raise their glasses and celebrate a moment they have unexpectedly become part of. It is one of those rare occasions when people from different countries, cultures and languages all share exactly the same emotion. Watching it never gets old.

Moments like these have changed the way we think about hospitality. Of course, we care deeply about the quality of our food, the freshness of our seafood and the service we provide, but over the years we have realised that our real privilege is something else entirely. We have the opportunity to become part of people's happiest memories. Knowing that someone will look back years from now and remember not only the sunset, but also how they felt sitting here by the sea, is the greatest compliment we could ever receive.

This isn't simply a restaurant overlooking the sea. It's a place where some of life's most important memories are made.
